Why We Built FilterOut

The water filter industry has a honesty problem.
We're fixing it.

FilterOut exists because buying a home water filter in Australia is harder than it should be — and the consequences of getting it wrong can follow you for years.

Water filtration is one of those purchases where the gap between what suppliers tell you and what you actually need is enormous. Walk into a consultation unprepared and you're likely to come out with a system you didn't need, a filter format that ties you to one company forever, and a maintenance contract that quietly costs more than the equipment itself.

"The most expensive filter isn't the one with the highest upfront price. It's the one that causes the most problems after it's installed."

We started FilterOut after seeing the same story repeat itself too many times. A homeowner researches online, finds an attractive price, and ends up with a system that either locks them into ongoing costs they didn't anticipate — or worse, a cheap import with no verifiable certification that fails within two years and leaves them chasing a company that's difficult to contact and offers little in the way of support.

The Australian market has been flooded with low-cost imported filter systems that look credible on a product listing but carry no independently audited certification, use substandard media that degrades quickly, and come from suppliers with no local service infrastructure. When something goes wrong — and with these products, something usually does — the cost of remediation often exceeds what a quality system would have cost in the first place.

Buying well once is almost always cheaper than buying badly twice. FilterOut exists to make sure you buy well the first time.

What we found

Three things that go wrong
when people buy a water filter

We reviewed 23 suppliers across Australia and found the same patterns repeating. These aren't edge cases — they're industry-wide issues.

🔒
Proprietary filter lock-in

Some suppliers use non-standard cartridge sizes that only fit their own housings. Once the system is installed, you have no choice but to buy replacements from them — at whatever price they set. Standard 20" × 4.5" cartridges are available from multiple suppliers for $15–$40. Proprietary equivalents can cost 3–5× more. We flag every supplier who does this.

📋
Unverifiable certification claims

WaterMark certification is mandatory under Australian plumbing law for any product connected to the water supply. Yet some suppliers claim certification without a verifiable licence number. Others display NSF or certification logos without an audit trail. We verify every certification claim against the official registry — and flag those we can't confirm.

💰
Hidden long-term costs

A $700 system with $200/year in proprietary cartridges costs more over 5 years than a $1,100 system with $60/year in standard ones. Most buyers compare upfront prices. We calculate total cost of ownership across a 10-year horizon — the number that actually matters when you're buying something installed in your home.

🚢
Cheap imports flooding the market

Australia has seen a surge in low-cost imported systems that look credible online but carry no independently audited certification, use filter media that degrades rapidly, and come from suppliers with no local service presence. When they fail — and many do — the cost of repair or replacement frequently exceeds what a quality system would have cost upfront. Cheap rarely stays cheap.

Our approach

How FilterOut is different

🚫
No paid placements. Ever.

Suppliers cannot pay to appear higher in our rankings, to have warnings removed, or to receive a better score. Our revenue model does not depend on supplier relationships. If a supplier scores poorly, that score is published.

🔢
10 criteria, publicly explained

Every supplier is scored across the same 10 criteria — from WaterMark certification and NSF scope to filter lock-in risk, after-sales support and pricing transparency. The full methodology is published so you can see exactly how we score.

⚠️
We publish warnings, not just praise

FilterOut is one of the only review sites that will tell you when a supplier's business model works against the buyer. Filter lock-in, unverified claims, high-pressure sales tactics — if we find it, we say it, regardless of how many Google reviews the supplier has.

💧
Built around your water, not our inventory

Perth's northern suburbs have water hardness above 200 mg/L. Sydney's water is different again. We built a suburb-level water quality lookup with tailored filter recommendations because the right filter depends on what's actually in your water — not what's in a supplier's catalogue.

📐
We check the things suppliers don't mention

Cartridge sizing. Installation compliance. Whether NSF certification applies to the product sold in Australia or just a variant sold elsewhere. The things a salesperson won't bring up are often the most important — and they're what we look for first.

🔄
Scores updated, not set and forgotten

Suppliers change ownership, alter product lines, drop certifications. We review scores quarterly and update them when something material changes. A high score from three years ago means nothing if the company has changed — and we make sure our scores reflect the current reality.

What we stand for

The principles we won't compromise on

01
The buyer's interest comes first

When the interests of a supplier and the interests of a buyer are in conflict, we side with the buyer. Always. This isn't a slogan — it's the reason FilterOut exists. If acting in the buyer's interest means publishing a low score or a warning about a popular supplier, we publish it.

02
Independent means independent

We don't accept advertising, sponsorship, referral fees or any form of payment from the suppliers we review. We don't accept free products for review. We don't accept hospitality. If a supplier approaches us about a commercial relationship, we decline. Our independence is the only thing that makes our scores worth anything.

03
Transparency over comfort

We publish our full scoring methodology, our data sources, and the reasons behind every score. If we can't verify a certification claim, we say so. If a supplier's score drops, we explain why. You should never have to take our word for it — the evidence is always there to check for yourself.

04
Education, not persuasion

Our goal is not to tell you which filter to buy. It's to give you the knowledge to make that decision yourself — and to walk into any supplier consultation with the confidence to ask the right questions. An informed buyer is the best protection against a bad purchase. That's what FilterOut is for.

Our promise to every person who uses this site

You will never be steered toward a supplier because they paid us. You will never see a warning hidden because a supplier complained. The information on FilterOut exists for one reason only — to help you buy the right product and avoid the wrong one.
