There is no shortage of whole-home water filter suppliers in Australia. There is a severe shortage of honest information about them. Most "best water filter" articles online are affiliate-driven — they earn a commission on every sale and rank suppliers accordingly. This one doesn't. Every score on this page comes from our independent methodology, applied the same way to every supplier.

The rankings below cover the suppliers we believe represent the best options nationally, with specific notes on who each suits best. We've also included a full comparison table across all 23 suppliers we've reviewed, and a plain-English guide to choosing the right system for your home.

How FilterOut scores work: Each supplier is rated out of 10 across 10 criteria — certifications, filter lock-in risk, cost of ownership, installation quality, warranty, support, reviews, transparency, product depth and responsiveness. No supplier can influence their score. Full methodology here.

Key takeaways — if you read nothing else
  • AquaCo scores 9.1/10 — highest in FilterOut's independent assessment. NSF certified, no lock-in, transparent pricing.
  • The top 5: AquaCo 9.1 · Puretec 8.6 · Cloudtap 8.3 · Purasource 8.2 · Aquasana 8.1.
  • Lock-in warning applies to nearly half the market. A proprietary cartridge system costs $1,000–$3,000 more over 10 years than an open-format equivalent.
  • High FilterOut score = certified filtration + no lock-in + low 5-year running cost + strong after-sales. Not just brand recognition.

Our top picks for 2026

These are the suppliers that consistently perform well across the criteria that matter most to homeowners making a long-term purchase decision. We've noted the specific situations each is best suited to.

1
AquaCo Water Filters
Perth, WA — national installs
Best Overall
9.1
FilterOut Score

AquaCo is the highest-scoring supplier in our entire dataset and the gap between them and second place is meaningful. They hold NSF 42 and NSF 53 certification on their filter media — not just the housing — use standard Big Blue filter housings that accept third-party cartridges, and their 5-year cost of ownership is among the lowest we modelled. The combination of genuine certified performance with zero lock-in risk is genuinely rare in this market.

What works well
NSF 42 & 53 on filter media — independently verified
Standard Big Blue housings — buy cartridges anywhere
Lowest lock-in risk of any supplier reviewed
Transparent line-item pricing before install
Worth knowing
Premium system price — not the cheapest upfront
Perth-based — interstate installs via contractors
2
Puretec Water Filtration
Victoria — national
Best for VIC/NSW
8.6
FilterOut Score

Puretec is the strongest nationally-distributed supplier in the east and the best choice for Victorian and NSW homeowners who want a supplier with genuine local presence. Their product range is the deepest of any supplier we reviewed, certification coverage is solid, and they have the most established service network outside of Perth. The slight trade-off is a higher annual cartridge cost than AquaCo.

What works well
Deepest product range of any supplier reviewed
Strong VIC/NSW service network
WaterMark certified across all hardware
Good warranty terms — 7 years housing
Worth knowing
Annual cartridge costs slightly above average
Some models use semi-proprietary media formats
3
Cloudtap
Perth, WA — WA only
Best Perth Value
8.3
FilterOut Score

Cloudtap offers the best value proposition for Perth homeowners who want genuine certification without paying the premium that AquaCo commands. They use standard-format housings, certification coverage is good, and their quoting process is among the most transparent of any Perth supplier. Service area is limited to WA, which is fine for most Perth buyers but rules them out for interstate homes.

What works well
Strong certifications relative to price point
Standard housings — no cartridge lock-in
Transparent quote process
Worth knowing
Perth/WA only — no interstate installs
Smaller review base than AquaCo or CHF
4
Purasource Water Filters
South Australia — SA/VIC
Best for SA
8.2
FilterOut Score

Purasource is the standout choice for South Australian homeowners. Adelaide's water has a well-documented quality problem — high hardness and taste issues — and Purasource's systems are specifically configured for SA water chemistry. Certification coverage is solid and their after-sales support scored above average in our assessment. Not widely distributed outside SA and VIC.

What works well
Systems configured for SA water chemistry
Strong local support network in SA
Above-average after-sales score
Worth knowing
Limited coverage outside SA/VIC
Smaller company — less review volume
5
Complete Home Filtration
Perth, WA — national
Read the lock-in section
6.8
FilterOut Score

CHF has by far the largest Google review base of any Perth supplier (2,400+) and genuinely impressive technical specs — 48 L/min flow rate is the highest in the market. We include them here because they're one of the most commonly purchased systems in WA. However, their proprietary 15" filter cartridge format is the most significant lock-in risk we've identified in this market. Once installed, you can only buy replacement filters from CHF. This is a material long-term risk that buyers must understand before signing.

What works well
48 L/min — highest flow rate reviewed
2,400+ Google reviews at 4.2★
WaterMark certified full system
Large showroom, walk-in support available
Watch out for
Proprietary 15" cartridge — no alternatives exist anywhere
$277/yr subscription — pricing set by CHF alone
NSF certification on media not independently confirmed

How to choose the right system for your home

The best whole-home water filter isn't the same for every Australian household. The right choice depends on your water source, your local water chemistry, your household size and — critically — how you plan to handle filter replacements over the next decade.

Start with your water problem

Different systems target different problems. Before comparing suppliers, you need to know what's actually in your water. The most common issues by state:

Perth / WA
Very hard water (150–250+ mg/L), high chloramine levels from Water Corporation disinfection treatment. Priority: TAC or salt softening + carbon block. Check your suburb →
Adelaide / SA
Hard water, higher TDS than most capitals, known taste issues. Priority: multi-stage carbon + softening. Adelaide consistently ranks as one of Australia's worst-tasting tap water cities.
Sydney / NSW
Relatively soft water but significant chloramine disinfection. Priority: high-grade carbon block. Sediment less of an issue. NSF 42 is the key cert here.
Melbourne / VIC
Soft, low-TDS water but chloramine treated. Similar to Sydney. A well-certified carbon block system is the primary need. Hardness treatment usually unnecessary.

The lock-in question is non-negotiable

The single most important question when comparing whole-home water filter suppliers is: can you buy replacement cartridges from anyone other than the installer?

Most systems use standard 10" or 20" Big Blue filter housings. Replacement cartridges for these are sold by dozens of suppliers online for $15–60 each. You are never dependent on your original installer.

A small number of suppliers use proprietary housings or cartridge formats. Once their system is installed, you are permanently dependent on them for replacements — at whatever price they choose to charge, on whatever schedule they set. This is not a minor footnote. Over a 10-year period, the cost difference between standard and proprietary cartridge formats can exceed $2,000.

⚠️
If a supplier cannot tell you the cartridge size and confirm it's available from third parties, treat this as a red flag. Every supplier in our top picks uses standard housing formats. See our full consultation checklist for the complete list of questions to ask.

What certifications actually matter

Australian suppliers frequently cite certifications in their marketing. Not all certifications are equal — and some are actively misleading.

See our full certifications guide for a complete breakdown of what each certification covers and how to verify claims.

Whole-home filter vs under-sink RO — do you need both?

A whole-home filter treats all water entering your house. An under-sink reverse osmosis system treats a single drinking tap to a much higher purity standard. They serve different purposes and are not alternatives to each other.

For most Australian homes on mains water, a quality whole-home filter is sufficient for bathing, cooking and drinking. If you have specific concerns about TDS, fluoride, or PFAS at your drinking tap, adding an RO unit under the kitchen sink is a reasonable second step — but it shouldn't be the starting point.

Before you sign anything — 6 things to confirm

Buyer's checklist
1
Cartridge format confirmed standard — ask for the exact filter size and confirm third-party cartridges are available. If they won't answer clearly, walk away.
2
NSF certification on the media, not just the housing — ask which specific NSF standard covers the filter media and where you can verify it at info.nsf.org.
3
Annual cartridge cost in writing — ask for the cost of each cartridge type, the recommended change interval, and whether pricing is fixed or can be changed.
4
Installer is a licensed plumber — in all Australian states, whole-home filter installation must be done by a licensed plumber. Ask for their plumber's licence number.
5
Warranty covers what you think it covers — "lifetime warranty" frequently means the housing only. Ask specifically what the warranty covers and for how long on each component.
6
Get at least three quotes — prices for equivalent systems vary significantly. Our three-quotes guide has a template you can send to each supplier to get genuinely comparable quotes.

The bottom line

For most Australian homeowners, the best whole-home water filter comes from a supplier who can confirm NSF 53 certification on their filter media and uses standard filter housings. Those two criteria alone eliminate the majority of long-term risk.

Best overall nationally: AquaCo (9.1) for any homeowner who wants the highest confidence in certification and zero lock-in risk, particularly in WA.
Best for the east coast: Puretec (8.6) for Victorian and NSW buyers who want an established national supplier with genuine local presence.
Best value in Perth: Cloudtap (8.3) for Perth homeowners who want solid certification without the premium price.
Best for SA: Purasource (8.2) for Adelaide homeowners dealing with SA's notoriously difficult water.
